LATEST UPDATE (at 4:30 pm, 26.02.2015): PRESS RELEASE of the Syriac Military Council

The Khabour region in the Al-Jazeera Canton is exposed to continuous military attacks by the ISIS terrorist organization. Since the beginning of February, ISIS has been conducting their persecution and attacks on the villages and areas of the Syriac people and rest of the region’s minorities.

They started with “Jizya”, which is a tax forced on non-Muslims. This escalated to ISIS removing crosses from churches, and then later attacking and assaulting with large numbers of terrorists using heavy weaponry, on a number of villages on the southern bank of the Khabour River including Tal Hormuz, Tal Shamiran and Gebesh, where the Syriac Military Council’s forces with Khabour were stationed, in addition to a number of other villages in the area. This took place at dawn on Monday, February 23, 2015. ISIS terrorists violently attacked The Syriac Military Council’s forces-MFS (“MAWTBO FOLHOYO SURYOYO”), which included the Khabour guards, who fought to defend these villages and prevent the terrorist organization’s control over them. From the attack, four of our freedom fighters were executed. These brave soldiers received the honor of martyrdom, while the fate of twelve other members of MFS and Khabour guards remains unknown. Our freedom fighters continued to defend their deployment positions until the end, refusing to withdraw from these villages.

During this process ISIS militias managed to kidnap and detain hundreds of Syriac – Assyrian civilians who were living in the 12 villages on the southern bank of the river including women, children and elderly. There status is still unknown with no confirmation on where they have been taken or whether they have been killed or not.

These attacks and the policies pursued by ISIS against the Syriac people in Syria is part of the murder, deportation and extermination policies faced by the Syriac Christian in their homeland, from the city of Mosul and Nineveh Plain and the ongoing violations and massacres for more than a hundred years. We consider it to be an attempt to uproot our people and end its historic presence in the Middle East, in addition to what other minorities Yezidis, Shabak, Kurds and others are facing.

We consider these threats and massacres that affect our people by ISIS and the other terrorist organizations, crimes against humanity that we must stand against by all possible means. We call on the international community and all democratic forces in the world to stand up against these violations and crimes, as they do not pose a threat to the Christian Syriac presence only, but to democracy and universal values of civilization and its entire inheritance.

We, the Syriac Military Council emphasize on continuing our struggle, resistance and defense of our people and the rest of the people in the region till the end. This is our sacred duty, swearing to sacrifice all that we have. This is the way our martyrs took and so will we, for the liberation of our territory and people to defend its existence, rights, dignity and land.

We call on the international community and the international coalition to do their duty in the fight against ISIS and support the military efforts held by the Syriac Military Council – MFS forces including Khabur Guards and the People Protection Units – YPG in the Khabur area. We also call to provide support by sending military equipment and heavy weapons capable of changing the balance of power on the ground and support the operations of our military units to fight ISIS, to stand in front of their extension and to liberate and control all areas.

These exceptional circumstances in our areas exposed by the Syriac people, compels us to stand together to confront the danger that we are exposed to. We call on all our people to support our military efforts and volunteer in these forces in order to carry our responsibility and our duty to defend our land and our people.

A Statement from the Syriac Military Council General Command –  23.02.2015

The Syriac Military Council – MFS, with the People Protection Units – YPG started on Sunday, February 22nd, a military operation against the barbaric ISIS orgnization in Tal Hamis frontline. The result of this operation lead to the liberation of 22 villages from ISIS control.

The victory of our freedom fighters in Tal Hamis lead to a counter attack from ISIS in the Khabour region in the early morning hours of Monday 23rd February. Although there has been resistance against ISIS, the terrorist group has been able to capture the villages of Tal Shamiran, Tal Tawil, Tal Hourmiz and several surrounding villages of Tal Tamer.

After heavy fights and resistance from the Syriac Military Council (MFS) and the Khabour Guards Council, 3 freedom fighters have been injured, and a group of the Khabour Guards and 4 freedom fighters, which resisted to the end in the village of Tal Hourmiz, in order not to give up the village, are still missing. The village of Tal Hourmiz is now under control of ISIS ; this leads us to assume, that our freedom fighters fall as martyr, although their bodies are not in our hands.

Despite all this incidents, the Syriac Military Council, together with YPG and Sutoro forces pulled together all their heavy military equipment and are fighting now ISIS in the Khabur region, in order to push back the barbaric attacks against the freedom fighters and our Syriac people. Many Syriac families have been forced to flee from their homes.

The fights are still continuing. MFS, Sutoro and YPG have been able to stop ISIS and prevent them from gaining more control. Our ultimate goal is to retake all the villages, so that families can return to their homes.

Syriac Military Council requests, all of our people not to follow the tendentious propaganda that aims to break our morales, at this dark times we need to stand in solidarity together to face these barbaric attacks that threaten us.
